Antibacterial and antimicrobial Coating

“IPRS Limited and Brinia Consultancy are introducing new exciting antibacterial and antimicrobial waterbase coating systems with Paint Manufacturer Inducoat into the Irish Market exclusively for the food, pharmaceutical, hygiene and healthcare industries.”

Inducoat

It is our responsibility to distribute, control and apply all Antimicrobial Coatings to ensure correct technical and aesthetic product application under the strict guidelines/training provided by Inducoat BV’. Based in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, Inducoat BV is the first coatings manufacturer with an exclusive focus on antimicrobial solutions, offering a range of paints and cleaners as the first line of defence against bacteria, moulds and algae.

The Inducoat concept is specifically designed for institutions and companies with a priority for hygiene, like hospitals, elderly homes, restaurants, wellness- sport & saunas, food production facilities and many more.

Inducoat has the mission to be the leader in smart antimicrobial coatings and cleaners. To achieve this goal Inducoat invests in state-of-the-art technologies, to maintain its position as front runner.

Silver Ion Technology

Silver antimicrobial technology is safe, natural and sustainable. Silver has been used for centuries for its abilities to aid preservation.

Prior to the introduction of antibiotics, silver was widely used in hospitals to combat bacteria and today it is used in a wide range of medical products.

Inducoat has used this antimicrobial technology together with their specific coating structures, designed by their highly skilled and trained chemists, to allow silver to be added to Inducoat paint systems. Silver is an ideal antimicrobial agent due to its efficacy or effectiveness against a comprehensive range of microorganisms and its lack of toxicity to non-target cells.

How does silver work?
Silver ions added to the Inducoat paint product at the time of manufacture concentrate on the surface of the coated surface and act against any contaminating bacteria. The silver ions bind with the bacteria and damage their cells in a number of ways, disrupting their normal function, stopping them from reproducing and causing them to die. They do this by passing through the bacterial cell wall and accumulating inside the cell where they damage it in a number of ways.

Silver ions combine with bacterial proteins located in the cell wall and interferes with their normal functioning. These proteins are vital for the healthy functioning of the cell so loss of their functioning results in the death of the bacteria.
Silver ions are known to promote the formation of harmful chemicals called reactive oxygen species (ROCs) inside bacterial cells. ROCs are harmful to living cells because they cause significant damage to cell structures. Damage caused by ROCs results in the cell’s death.

Silver ions are also known to interfere with the way bacteria copy their genetic material or DNA. Bacteria, like most living cells, have to make copies of their DNA when they reproduce to make new cells. Silver ions stop the bacteria being able to replicate by blocking the copying of their genetic material. Importantly, a non-replicating population of bacteria won’t increase in size because the cells that die are not replaced by new ones. Eventually the population of bacteria disappears.

Antimicrobial protection
As the graph shows, on a Inducoat protected surface, levels of bacteria are reduced by up to 99% in two hours, compared to an unprotected surface where they can proliferate at dramatic rates.

Antimicrobial coating

Laboratory tests have repeatedly demonstrated the ability of Inducoat protected surfaces to inhibit the growth and formation of moulds and yeast.

Inducoat antimicrobial protection is effective against a broad spectrum of micro-organisms, including:

  • MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
  • MSSA (Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus)
  • E. coli
  • Legionella pneumophila
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Salmonella typhimurium and enteritidis
  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • VRE (vancomycin – resistant Enterococcus)
  • Campylobacter spp.
  • Staph. aureus
  • Aspergillus niger
  • Candida albicans
